Thomas Volker - Pastor
I was born and raised in Western Minnesota in the small town of Herman. My parents still live there. I've been married to my wife, Verna for eleven years and the Lord has blessed us with three hansom and happy boys.
I love being a pastor. I love the people I get to work with in a church. I love showing them the parts of God's word that they may never have seen. I love being able to remind people of the presence of God in their most fragile times.
I love holding on to the promises of God. I admit, it isn't always easy to do. Life has a way of distracting me. But in the end, I get my energy from words like this:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Rev. 21:5
These are the verses that get me through the day. When my life seems to go south, I try to remember Jeremiah 29; that my life is in the hands of the one who has plans for me.
When I've messed up, I try to remember Revelation 21; that there is always a second chance from the one who died and rose again for me.

Cheri Sykes - Director of Music
Cheri Sykes serves as Director of Music for Mt. Zion's 8:30 am traditional service and 11 am contemporary service. Cheri has been a church musician since the early 1980's, with ecumenical experience in Lutheran, Methodist, and Catholic parishes along the way. She has been a "permanent student" type, earning a B.A. in piano, and graduate degrees in theology from Luther Seminary and Sacred Music from Emory University in Atlanta. In addition to her training in organ and choral conducting, Cheri plays jazz piano and folk/rock guitar. As a church musician, she considers such stylistic eclecticism helpful.
